IN THE MIDST OF ALL
In the Midst of All is an exhibition that delves into the interplay of materials and memory within the context of domestic spaces. It invites viewers to contemplate how our surroundings hold fragments of our experiences and how the boundaries between interior and exterior landscapes are fluid.
The constant use of concrete in the show intensifies the stability and permanence of our physical environments. It is the foundation upon which memories are built, much like the structure of a house. But this house, much like the walls of the mind, becomes a reflective surface that blurs the boundaries between the tangible and the ephemeral. In this case, the concrete becomes a page, a skin, on which passages have been “petrified” with graphite and color pencils. These series of delicate drawings on concrete plates capture domestic scenes, such as a rocking chair draped with a bed cover, floor tiles, shadows, and an “empty” frame. Each drawing evokes a sense of nostalgia and the transient beauty found in ordinary moments. Complementing the domestic scenes, the show includes a series of intricately detailed graphite drawings of insects, including beetles, grasshoppers, millipedes, and moths. These insects embody the idea that the exterior world often finds its way into the interior spaces we inhabit. They also symbolize the fragility and impermanence of life, prompting viewers to ponder their own place within the larger ecosystem.
Two sculptural assemblage pieces serve as anchors in the exhibition. They are constructed from concrete, wood, and found objects, mirroring the varied materials found in both interior and exterior settings. These pieces challenge conventional perceptions of space and reality by melding different elements into a cohesive whole.
At the heart of the gallery stands a central piece made out of clay, and concrete tiles adorned with drawings of ants. The design created by the tiles emulates or reminds of a labyrinth whose path is defined by the concrete tiles. This piece, this fragment of floor, centers on the intricacies of recollections as a liminal space where each tile like a puzzle piece builds the journey of such passage.
In the Midst of All invites you to appreciate the beauty in the mundane and to find solace in the interplay of past and present, interior and exterior.
